Weightlifting isn't just for bulking up and Kim is proof. After having children the star transformed her body with the help of bodybuilder Melissa Alcantara. "I've been working out really hardcore with a bodybuilder for one year. September is our one-year anniversary," Kim revealed to E! News in 2018, via People. She lifts "heavy weights," with her trainer telling Women's Health that 85% of their training is done with weights and just 15% is cardio.
If you want a body like Kim, plan on making a serious time commitment. "I work out about an hour-and-a-half every single day," Kim told E! News. Alcantara has revealed that the duo train together six days a week for 60 to 90 minutes.
"Just like anybody else, there are days where Kim's not really feeling it, but she will do it," Alcantara told People in 2020. "Then there are a lot of days when she's killing it! She never questions the stuff that I make her do, she's just like, 'Okay,' and I love that."
While Kim doesn't do a ton of cardio, short and fast sprints are part of her routine. "Been sprinting every day!" she wrote in one of her Instagram Stories in 2021. "I've been seeing changes!"
Kim was once a carnivore devoted to the Atkins diet, but now primarily eats plants. "Plant based and two workouts a day for 30 days to get our mind and body right this year!" she exclaimed in a January 2021 Instagram post.
Kim sets herself up for fitness success by workout prepping the night before. "I will lay my clothes out the night before so when I sleep in, I'll wake up at 5.53[am] instead of 5.45, and I just know my outfit is there," she said. "I have a toothbrush and my toothpaste all ready to go, laid out by my sink. I just have to brush my teeth and go to the gym."
Kim eats right for fitness. "My trainer Mel always says that before and after you train, you should eat simple carbs, like sweet potatoes, and small amounts of fat and protein, like chicken. You should also have veggies with your meals, since you need them to help effectively break down and absorb your protein, fat, and carbs," she wrote on her app in 2018, per Harper's Bazaar.
Kim is all about LISS workouts, which have recently become a trendy method of fitness. "Two days out of the week we'll do steady-state cardio," Alcantara told WH, "so just walking at a steady pace on the treadmill for usually around 20 minutes. Nothing getting the heart rate too high."
Kim focuses her diet around real, unprocessed foods. "I want her to eat real food that's cooked every day," Alcantara told People. "Most likely if it comes out of a box, it's not going to be good for you."
"When I work with Kim, we like to set goals that we can feel good about reaching," Alcantara told WH. "Once we have a goal set, we write it down. I've found that helps hold you accountable. And, it feels amazing when you do finally reach your goal!
